Today I am writing down a story that really happened within my family, to be precise with my grandfather. Well, he used to live on the outskirts of Firozpur, India with the entire family. My grandfather was one of the most strong and known people in the town.
One day he went to meet some of the villagers when he told them that a guy from a neighboring village would be visiting me tomorrow at 5 a.m.
During those days, he owned a number of farms, one of which was about to be cultivated.
This news was known to a lot of people in the village and somehow a ghost, commonly known as Chalawa living in the town came to know about it.

Around 3 a.m., a guy came to my grandfather and stood near his head. During those days, he used to sleep outside on a cot (Charpai). The guy who was supposed to arrive at 5 p.m. He woke my grandfather and said, “Panditji, it’s 5.30 a.m., let’s go, we have to work.” My grandfather didn’t even think twice and got up. He took a spade with him and went towards the farm.
Note that the time utilized in cultivating a normal field takes about 2 to 3 hours and sometimes even more. However, the guy who was with my grandfather completed the process within 15 to 20 minutes. My grandfather was really astonished by that. But the guy was convinced that it had been an hour and he might not be aware of it.
My grandfather thought that he might be a strong guy with great stamina, that’s why he did it so fast.
The guy further started insisting my grandfather visit a nearby lake to freshen up. This is where he started doubting the guy and thought that this might be some kind of trap.
The guy said, “Panditji, you give me the spade and go freshen up and I will complete the task first.”
Well, basically there is this theory that is prevalent among Indian people that ghosts or Chalawa get scared of iron, fire, and other such things. The spade that my grandfather was holding had iron on the top of it.
Asking such things in a weird way, made my grandfather stay on his toes. He instantly lit a cigarette and offered it to that man. Seeing the cigarette, the guy jumped back and took steps in fear.

Seeing this, my grandfather was assured that something was wrong. That guy then started to insist that my grandfather should give him a spade and go to the lake with him. But he did not give up his spade and started to walk towards the lake.
Suddenly, the insisting turned into an argument. My grandfather got so angry and put his spade into that guy. To his surprise, the spade went through him. My grandfather got so scared by this that he started running towards his house, shouting the names of his son and my uncle. As he reached, he told everything to everyone and they lit fire to have some light.
Soon, the guy who was actually going to visit my grandfather came and asked him what happened and why there was so much chaos. People explained everything, resulting in the guy being a ghost.
In the region, it is said that the Chalawa clones itself into villager’s relatives and takes them near the lake. After seeking the opportunity, it kills and beheads that person and buries his head and the leftover body in a different location.
